Our bodies are temples?

I remember hearing once that our bodies are temples and thus we shouldn't eat bad food or avoid working out. As an avid Crossfitter (www.crossfit.com), I think I have the second one covered, but I could probably eat better. There is nothing better-tasting in my opinion than a double Whopper with cheese from Burger King and some fries from MacDonald's (I know- I have to go to two places to get a good meal...).

But, what of the idea that we should take care of our bodies for the Lord by working out and eating healthy? I think there might be something to that, but not sure of the principle behind it.

I don't think you should make yourself malnourished, but don't obsess about this either. 1 Timothy 4:3-5 (NIV) tells us that "hypocritical liars" teach false doctrines that "forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving ty those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer."

    As for physical fitness, 1 Tim 4:8 acknowledges that "physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." I don't think working out or eating healthy is bad, but don't elevate it to some high spritual dimension either.

  2. What about the commandment of Loving God with all your faculties? Therefore, if you put other things first (my selfishness for good-tasting foods) over my health (which is arguably more important to others (my kids, wife, etc.)- then I am not fulfilling the commandment. Right?`

  3. I think as long as we don't put our desire for good food - or our desire to be physically fit - before our desire for God we're OK. All those good foods are a gift really. It's not like we're stuck eating manna in the desert. The earth produces an amazing bounty. We would be ungrateful not too enjoy it. We just shouldn't be gluttons. And if we are gluttons, we should go excercise more. We just have to be careful not to let either take priority over our relationship with God.
